Having a good credit score is deemed to be prestigious and highly critical. If you are a resident of the US, you would have always considered this figure to be vital. But what does this really mean? Who is the universal monitor for the credit scoring system? Are there different credit scores in existence? Read ahead and get to know these facts in detail.

What is Credit Score?

Credit score is a statistical figure that pictures the creditworthiness of a person. Whenever an individual opts for a loan, the lender or the creditor would want to know the individual’s credit score to start with for this would form the basis of the credit that is offered to the individual. Credit scores are considered to be the base on which the lenders’ make their final decision regarding the approval amount and percentage of interest.

The higher the credit score, the better is the credit worthiness and the repayment capability of the individual. A higher credit score is associated with nominal interest rates and higher loan sanction probabilities.

The credit score of the residents is being monitored and maintained by three different bureaus in America. They constitute the Experian, Trans Union and Equifax. The very popular credit score rating system that is in existence is based on the FICO model developed by the Fair Isaac Corporation in the year 1956. Based on the data reported and collected at the bureaus, each of them calculate and maintain their own credit scores for the residents. As a resident, you can resort to get your credit report for free from the bureaus only once in a year, which could further help you in understanding the existence of negative entries in the same.

However, in addition to the FICO model, VantageScore is yet another credit rating product that has been adopted by the three bureaus since 2006.

FICO Score versus VantageScore

FICO score is calculated based on the 5 different financial entities that you currently have. While 35% of the score depends on your payment history, 30% on the current debts that you have, 15% on the length of your credit history, 10% on the new credits that you have and the last 10% on types of credit that you own, the scoring system in case of VantageScore differs a bit.

While FICO scores available at the 3 different bureaus are likely to vary for the same individual since it is dependent on the data reported/collected, VantageScore is deemed to be almost the same at least in theory.

While 32% of the VantageScore is based on your payment history, 23% of it is calculated based on the credit utilization, 15% on the current credit balances that you have, 13% on the depth of your credit, 10% on recent credit and 7% on the available credit, the scoring system has a 501-990 scale on contrary to the scale of 300-850 offered by the FICO model.

The Know-How to Have Good Credit Scores

The following are the best and the simplest means that would enable you to have a good credit score in reality.

Ensure that you pay all your bills on time.

Make sure that you do not default in any of your debt repayments.

Try to keep your current credits well within the limit. Let your current credit be way apart from what is granted to you. This would give you a better debt to credit ratio which in turn can pave way to a good credit score.

Make sure that you never get into delinquent debts for this would reflect negatively on your credit score.

The number of credit accounts that you have does matter. See to it that you have at the most 2 or 3 creditors at a time.

Ensure that you have a good credit limit with every creditor for this would offer a positive impact to your credit score.

Always ensure that you have a lengthy credit history since a short one can increase the chances of indecisiveness with respect to your creditworthiness.

Doesn’t matter who you are, first you are a human. God’s creation, and God’s gift to the world. Whether you believe in him or not, we are all brought to this world (born) to serve our purpose, to live and experience the ups and downs of life, to cry and laugh, to share the same with others. You know that this life’s eternity is not promised to anyone. What we do on earth is the reflection of how we want to be treated. As we leave this world, some of us want to be remembered for our good deeds and some may not want to be remembered at all. The choices are yet our own.

Whether you believe in God or not, whatever your goal in life is, I hope the article below puts tears of JOY, LOVE and HOPE in your eyes, heart and mind. I hope it pushes you closer to your friends and brighten your days as you’ll do the same for others. My repeated message has been “Do to others as you want to be done to you.”

THE OLD FISHERMAN

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore . We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out-patients at the Clinic.

One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. “Why, he’s hardly taller than my eight-year-old,” I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body.

But the appalling thing was his face, lopsided from swelling, red and raw Yet, his voice was pleasant as he said, “Good evening. I’ve come to see if you’ve a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and there’s no bus ’till morning.”

He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but with no success; no one seemed to have a room. “I guess it’s my face. I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments…”

For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.” I told him we would find him a bed, but to rest on the porch.

I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. “No thank you. I have plenty” And he held up a brown paper bag.

When I had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him a few minutes. It didn’t take a long time to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury.

He didn’t tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence was prefaced with thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going.

At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded, and the little man was out on the porch.

He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as if asking a great favor, he said, “Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment?

I won’t put you out a bit. I can sleep fine in a chair.” He paused a moment and then added, “Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was welcome to come again.

And on his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest oysters I had ever seen. He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so that they’d be nice and fresh. I knew his bus left at 4 a.m. , and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us.

In the years he came to stay overnight with us there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden.

Other times we received packages in the mail, always by special delivery; fish and oysters packed in a box of fresh young spinach or kale, every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these and knowing how little money he had made the gifts doubly precious.

When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning. “Did you keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people!”

Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice but, oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their illness would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God.

Recently I was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse. As she showed me her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all, a golden chrysanthemum, bursting with blooms. But to my great surprise, it was growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, “If this were my plant, I’d put it in the loveliest container I had!”

My friend changed my mind. “I ran short of pots,” she explained, “and knowing how beautiful this one would be, I thought it wouldn’t mind starting out in this old pail. It’s just for a little while, till I can put it out in the garden.”

She must have wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining just such a scene in heaven. There’s an especially beautiful one, “God might have said when he came to the soul of the sweet old fisherman. “He won’t mind starting in this small body.”

All this happened long ago — and now, in God’s garden, how tall this lovely soul must stand.

The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

working life of 35 years. So a 25 year student loan takes a big
chunk out of your life, even if you are never unemployed.

And that’s before you take out a mortgage!

Buy second-hand whenever possible – even your textbooks. Clothes
from the Salvation Army are cheap. Use eBay, but don’t buy
anything you don’t need. My first boss said I’d furnished my
house for less than he spent on his bedroom. Negotiate -
Important for second hand, even more for new goods. When you go
in to buy a new fridge, the attendant waits to see if you’re
stupid enough to pay the price tag, or ask for a discount.

Remember a dollar saved is four dollars in student loans that
you won’t have to pay back.

Credit cards are considered debt by economists even before you begin the first swipe of the card. When people get credit cards, they often have a misconception that this is extra money that can be spent. But in reality it’s not. It’s a debt that you have to pay with interest. Credit card companies earn revenues from the interest rates and fees that they get from credit card users and the interest rates from one credit card to another varies. Paying the principal amount with the interest can be hard and put people into bad credit standings.

Having a credit card has its perks. It is usually one financial statement that can reflect how good you manage your finances if you are able to make the payments in time without incurring any bad debts. Once a person has bad credit ratings or no credit record, their loan applications or credit card applications may get declined. But there are credit card companies that offer credit cards to repair credit or create a credit report. Online credit card review sites have a section for those with good credit and bad credit standings. Banks can also provide credit card to repair debt together with a secured or maintained savings or checking account.

These credit cards are either secure or unsecured credit cards. The secured credit card only allows a limit that will be computed based on how much a person has in his bank account. While unsecured credit cards allow consumers to transfer their balances to credit cards that have lower interest rates. There are some unsecured credit cards that offer zero percent interest for the first six months, before they apply the regular interest rates. There are also debit cards that allow consumers to pay with the conveniences of a regular credit card.

The credit card companies that offer these bad debt credit cards report to financial credit offices if you are able to make the monthly payments in order to bring your credit standings back to good ratings. They can also provide a credit report for those without credit histories like students.

The only catch to these types of credit cards are that they have higher fees and may have higher interest rates.
