Kelli Space is just 23 years old and is already 0,000 in debt.
The Northeastern University graduate figures that without help, she’ll never be able to repay the nearly 0,000 in private student loans she owes to non-governmental private student loan companies and the additional ,000 in federal student loans she owes to the U.S. Department of Education.
Space says she’s already been turned down for student loan consolidation, and her current employment doesn’t pay enough to allow her to repay her student loans.
The Cost of College in Bad Choices and Student Loans
Space readily admits that she made some bad decisions when it came to her college loans. She was the first in her family to attend college and didn’t pay much attention to the spiraling cost of her student loans while she was incurring them.
She was attending a private, out-of-state school whose annual cost is estimated to be nearly ,000 for undergraduate studies, and tacked on costs for studying abroad for a year and summer classes. Space also admits that she realized her mistakes while she was still in school but didn’t transfer to a less expensive institution. Her parents had initially planned to help with her college expenses, but Space’s father was injured and has been unable to work for several years.
The end result was more than 0,000 in student loan debt, which Space says she’s determined to repay one way or another. She’s been making the monthly 1 payment on her private student loans but notes that the payment will rise to ,600 a month beginning next year.
Sallie Mae, her primary lender, won’t consolidate her private student loans or allow her to move to an income-based repayment plan, so she’s done what she can do: Set up a website soliciting donations to help repay her college loans.
The site, TwoHundredThou.com, chronicles Space’s troubles with student loans and is tracking progress on her debt reduction. To date, Space has received nearly ,000 in donations, which she’ll use to pay down her student loans. She doesn’t think she’ll receive enough in donations to pay off her student loan debt altogether, but she says that she hopes to draw attention to the problems that she and many other new graduates face when it comes to repaying private student loans.
Private student loans, unlike government-issued federal student loans, don’t typically offer the same flexibility in repayment options or in setting up affordable repayment plans that take a borrower’s income into account.
College Financing Advice for Students From One Who’s Been There
Space advises high school and college students to get more financially savvy about the real cost of student loans and the interest those loans will accrue following graduation. Space also hopes that high schools, colleges, and universities will develop more intelligent ways of discussing student loan debt with students who have no “family history” when it comes to attending college.
Space believes that if she had developed a more realistic understanding of the process of paying for college while in high school, she may not have made the same mistakes. Unfortunately, she says, there are few opportunities for high school teachers or guidance counselors to explain to college-bound students the impact that overwhelming student loan debt can have on their financial future.
She says that if she could do it all over again, knowing what she knows now, she would have attended a community college for the first year or two, to save money on tuition costs, and then transferred to a four-year institution once she had determined a major. Then she would have used her major and the employment prospects for graduates in that field to help determine the amount of debt that she could reasonably take on in college loans.
In the meantime, Space is sharing her parents’ New Jersey home with no plans to move out and is working full-time for an Internet company in New York City. She says that she has little chance of declaring bankruptcy, but she doesn’t want other students to make the same mistakes she did, and she hopes her website serves as a cautionary tale to students who are considering their options for college and for how to pay for college.

Repairing Credit After Debt Settlement – The Tax Implications of Settling A Debt

]]>
You may be lucky enough to have all or part of your debt wiped clean when you offer to settle with a creditor. This sometimes happens when you negotiate a reduced payoff and the creditor agrees to designate your account paid in full for less than the original debt. However, your initial peace of mind could leave you with a higher tax bill.
People experiencing financial setbacks sometimes approach their creditors to obtain debt relief, either directly or through an intermediary such a credit counseling company. While this is relatively easy to do and more and more creditors are open to it, you should know that such a debt settlement could have negative tax ramifications.
If you settle a debt with a creditor, or the creditor writes it off, you could owe money to the IRS on that amount. This applies to credit card defaults, property repossession, or money you owe after a foreclosure.
Anytime a credit card company, government agency, bank, credit union, savings and loan, or finance company forgives or writes off 0.+ of debt, they have to submit a Form 1099-C to both you and the IRS. You must them report it as income on your federal income tax return except in these cases:
A student loan canceled because you worked as promised when you took out the loan in a profession and for a specified employer.
A mortgage on your principal home of less than M if you file single or jointly with your spouse (M if you file individually with your spouse) that was wholly or partially forgiven between 2007 and 2012.
A nonbusiness debt canceled before 2007 as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
A canceled debt that would have been deductible if you had paid it.
A debt discharged in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Cancellation or write-off of a debt intended as a gift (highly unlikely).
You were insolvent (your debts exceed the value of your assets) before the creditor agreed to waive or write off the debt. You can avoid reporting the debt as income only to the extent that you were insolvent.
To claim an exception, you need to file an IRS Form 982: Reduction of Tax Due to Discharge of Indebtedness form. This form can be complicated – especially if you are claiming the insolvency exception. Consult an accountant to ensure it is properly done. They can also help you on your tax return.
A debt settlement where your creditor settles for less than the original amount can affect your tax liabilities. While this may appear to eliminate all your problems in the short term, it can complicate your tax situation. Hiring a competent accountant to review your circumstances can guarantee that you stay on the right side of the IRS.

Debt Relief – How To Consolidate Debts And Repair Your Credit

If you think you are alone with your debt, think again. Everyone, regardless of economic status or situation, is in debt in one way or another. You might have small debts, like credit cards or financing, or large debts like student loans and mortgages. Either way, your level of debt directly affects your credit.
Without a good credit score, you might have trouble getting a loan or a mortgage, or even a debit card – things that most of us take for granted. Your credit score is the key to your credit report, maintained through a credit bureau. If you miss payments or fall into default on a debt, it will be reported to your credit bureau, and as a result, your credit rating will fall. Repairing your credit effectively is a process with many steps, and is unique to each individual. However, one method of improving credit scores, that has worked for individuals in many situations, is debt consolidation.
It is important when dealing with credit repair to act quickly. Though your credit rating became damaged as soon as you missed a payment on your loan or debt, it will get worse and be more difficult to act on later if you don’t act right away. It is a common misconception that you either have “good” or “bad” credit and once you get behind, it’s pointless to try and fix it. This is not true! It’s always best to work on your credit issues right away, because if given the opportunity, they will get worse.
Even if your haven’t been able to pay your creditors on time, repairing your credit requires that you pay your debts as quickly as you can. Unfortunately, your economic situation is probably such that you don’t have all the money you need to pay your debts, or you wouldn’t be missing your payments in the first place. This is why debt consolation can be a great tool in credit repair.
Debt consolidation works by combining all of your existing debts into one loan. In other words, if you have several different existing debts, you can take out a single loan from one bank or company, pay your existing debts with that loan, and be left with only one loan to pay off.
Debt consolation allows you flexibility in situations where your outstanding debts have become unmanageable. Though the amount of money you owe won’t change, you could get a long-term loan for your debt consolidation and your monthly payments will be lower. Best of all, debt consolidation will immediately bring you current with your creditors, and ultimately repairing your credit will be easier. Debt consolidation is not a quick-fix credit solution, but it will prevent additional immediate damage to your credit, and allow you to begin repairing your credit right away

It’s tough to know who to listen to these days. Every other person on television is an economic expert, who talks about how the economy is or isn’t getting stronger. What the average consumer knows better than economists is how tough things are on personal debt. Many are looking for good, solid credit advice to see them through the times.
Credit advice can be found any number of places. Assuming that the consumer doesn’t have any one in the family who is an expert, it means seeking one out. There are free credit advise or counseling services, and organizations who can provide counsel. If a consumer is sensing that budgeting is not working well for them, then this type of counseling may help him get back on track.
For those whose finances have gotten out of control or are so behind in payments that the bill collectors and dun notices are stacking up, it may be beyond simple counseling. It may be time to seek credit advise from debt relief or resolution companies. There are four types of basic credit advise that they’ll give the consumer. The options are debt consolidation, debt settlement, debt management or bankruptcy. Outside of winning the lottery, these are the four solutions and each comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. That’s where getting good credit advise is important.
Professional debt relief and resolution companies have seasoned and expert counselors on staff, who can work with a consumer and set out an individual plan of action for them. They look at the whole situation and all of the circumstances before offering advise, and will include the consumer at all times. Making a decision on what form of debt relief to employ should be educated and considered one, and regardless of how expert and good credit advice seems, the consumer should make the final decision.
As a part of this type of credit advise, it is also important for the consumer to become educated on new financial practices and develop new spending habits. Even if a financial settlement plan becomes successful, the only way to make it a permanent solution is to change those things that cause it in the first place.
Credit advise is easily given if the giver has no financial obligation in the situation. Check references and credentials before making the first appointment. There will be far more likelihood for a successful resolution when the right advisor is selected to being with

Is Using a Debt Consolidation Service a Good Way to Repair Credit Score?

Your credit rating is based on many factors, and they are all factors that you have some level of control over.
When you open up multiple high interest rate credit card accounts, you are lowering your credit score. When you use those accounts instead of using cash, you are lowering your credit score.
Aurora Lillo Editor of the “Best Debt Consolidation Services” website — http://www.FreeDebtConsolidationQuotes.net — pointed out;
“…Even the act of having all of those credit card companies check your credit to see if you qualify for an account is something that can have a negative impact on your credit score…”
When it comes to your payment history, you can severely damage your credit by consistently paying on your credit accounts more than 30 days late. When you build up a large amount of high interest rate credit card accounts, you will sometimes find yourself in a situation where your debt begins to overshadow your monthly income.
You are forced to decide which accounts you can pay, and which ones will have to wait to get paid at a later date. If you do this often enough, it becomes very easy to forget to make payments and the next thing you know you are getting a letter from your creditors telling you that you are two or three months behind on your payments.
One way that you can put an end to all of this is through debt consolidation. A debt consolidation company will gather up all of that high interest credit card debt, and reduce it to just one low interest rate consolidation loan payment.
Your payments could be cut almost in half just by eliminating the very high monthly interest payments you were making. You will also see all of those high monthly service charges replaced by one low monthly loan service charge which can lower your monthly obligations even further.
“…Now your credit debt is consolidated and those accounts are all paid, which means that the damage they were causing to your credit score will stop. The extra cash flow you have created by eliminating a large portion of your high interest rate credit card debt means that you can start using cash instead of credit to make regular purchases. Using cash raises your credit score, and now you will see that debt assistance has done many things to help repair and raise your credit score…” added A. Lillo.

Aurora Lillo Editor of the “Best Debt Consolidation Services” website — http://www.FreeDebtConsolidationQuotes.net — pointed out;
“…Even the act of having all of those credit card companies check your credit to see if you qualify for an account is something that can have a negative impact on your credit score…”
Lillo.

Is Using A Debt Consolidation Service A Good Way To Repair Credit Score?

]]>
Are you trying to figure out whether or not consolidating debt will help you repair bad credit? If you’ve been having credit difficulties, you are probably already worried about trying to fix your credit score.
Financial trouble can make it difficult for a person to get an apartment, mortgage, or car loan when they really need one. Contacting a debt consolidation service can be a great way to start the process of becoming credit worthy again.
Hector Milla Editor of the “Best Debt Consolidation Services” website — http://www.BestDebtConsolidationServices.net — pointed out;
“…If you are looking into consolidating loans, you are probably already having a hard time paying your monthly bills. The missed payments that you are trying to avoid will have a very strong negative impact on your financial future, so it is very important for you to keep paying your bills. It is important to remember what a negative impact missing payments has on your debt records…”
Debt consolidation services can help you create a regular record of paying your obligations on time. When you change your payment structure into one monthly payment instead of many, you increase the chances that you will be able to keep up on bills. Frequently, your new loan will require a smaller and more affordable monthly payment than your old, spread out obligations. This has the benefit of allowing you to build up a positive report, because you pay what you owe on time every month.
“…By reducing your late or absent bills and creating on time payments, using a service that allows you to owe money to one financial organization instead of many can help you repair a weak credit score. When you are searching for the right service, be careful to choose one that will create a lower payment structure than what you already have so you increase your chances of being able to pay money you owe on schedule every month. This will help you build a solid financial base…” H. Milla added.

Is Using A Debt Consolidation Agency A Good Way To Repair Credit Score?

When looking into the benefits of a debt consolidation loan, you must understand exactly what a consolidation loan is for, along with that it can do for you. Once you have grasped an idea of the entire process of a consolidation loan you will know whether it will help you in your specific situation cure credit score problems while fixing your debt. What is debt consolidation? Debt consolidation is a plan provided by a company to its clients which enables these clients to take their severely overdue, building up together, multiple debts and turn them into one single easy to manage debt with lower monthly payments. Making the clients more able to take care of themselves and their families more efficiently then before they took out the consolidation loan. How does a consolidation work? A consolidation works by a client of a company receiving a loan from the consolidation company to pay off all overdue debts. This said loan is typically not handed straight over to the person taking out the loan but the company usually pays off all of these debts for the client, and sometimes is also able to get the client a discount on the total debt being the debt is being paid off in full. After all debts are paid the consolidation company makes a time payment agreement between them and the client, the time payment agreement will be customized in consideration with how much was borrowed, what the clients monthly income is, and required living expenses. This way the monthly bill to be paid will not be unaffordable enough as to where the client goes back into debt. Is a debt consolidation agency able to repair a client’s credit score? The answer to this question depends upon the client’s ability to pay back the loan given by the consolidation company, for example if a client makes all payments on time and pays off the debt without error the credit score will improve. But if the client has other debts not being paid, or payments being missed on the consolidation loan the credit will decrease. So really yes consolidation can fix your credit, but only if you work to that goal.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Debt Consolidation Helps Repair Credit And Raise Credit Score
When it seems like no sooner your monthly check comes the money starts to vanish into multiple debt payments, you might be facing the harsh reality that your debts are spiraling out of control.
Different loans carry different APRs and terms of repayment which can be confusing and overwhelming. If repaying debts seems insurmountable it might be time to take professional help and consider debt consolidation. Your chosen lender will then provide you with a single loan with a lower rate of interest to cover that consolidated payment. Often these companies will broker negotiations with credit card companies to lower rates of interest and even reduce the total amount owed.
Hector Milla Editor of the “Best Debt Consolidation Services” website — http://www.BestDebtConsolidationServices.net — pointed out;
“…Contrary to what many people believe, a carefully drawn consolidation plan with good terms can actually help repair your faulty credit and also help raise your credit score. Your new single loan should be used to pay off your high interest credit card loans first. This greatly helps your credit evaluation, because it shows credit being paid off. While most APRs on credit cards are around a high 23%, consolidation firms offer loans at much lower rates. This also improves your debt to income ratio. You are also driving down your monthly payments which is also the first thing to ease you out of distress. This is how debt consolidation can prove remedial to your financial crisis situation and have a positive impact on your credit scores…”
A common mistake people commit when they are trying to increase their credit score is to close several of their operating credit cards. Availing credit on credit cards can be a double-edged sword. Canceling them signals that your one-time potential to raise credit with a demonstrated ability to pay off now stands damaged. So rather than canceling out your credit cards, use their existence to show that you still are seen as credit-worthy by credit givers. Here again, debt consolidation is almost your only way out to help retain them and yet not fall behind on payments as that would damage your credit score. Just be cautious that you never miss payments on a debt consolidation plan as this will undo the entire repair to your credit again.
“…Lastly, do not forget that what landed you in this situation. It would be raising credit that is disproportionate to your ability to pay off. And certainly, do not live in ‘financial denial’. Not using this single loan remedy may mean bankruptcy a few years later. Choosing the right lender, exercising discipline and proper budgeting can lead you to a debt free life in a few years…” H. Milla added.
